The ladies still get the food out of the feeder and it does lay on the ground, however. not near as much goes to waste. It holds almost a 1.2 bag of food at a time. 

Our ladies just turned 6 month in Oct, and we filll this about once every 4 weeks. Now that they are all laying, we are filling at about the 3 week mark. Even though they can scratch it out of the feeder onto the ground, and they do eat that, they prefer to eat from the feeder, which seems more sanitary.
