What is Sheet Metal Forming?

The sheet is purchased in a flat state and then cut into the final state through a series of progressive steps. For a typical sheet metal project, the first step is equivalent to sheet metal cutting, where cutting, laser, water spray, plasma, or stamping are used to create internal holes and edge features of the part. This process is also known as punching.

Once the billet is produced, the next step is to use various tools to form a metal plate, but the most common is a certain type of brake. The brake press can be manual or automatic, using a mold insert to generate the required angle bending and form a three-dimensional object from a two-dimensional sheet. Metal sheet forming can bend parts in multiple directions, resulting in simple parts such as brackets, achieving highly complex geometric shapes that may require customized molds. Once the tools are in place, manufacturing subsequent sheet parts in production is very cost-effective.
